One day I woke up and became tinned fish girl?!!?! People just gave me this reputation of being obsessed with tinned fish and I was like WHEN? WHY? WHERE?

Anyway explored tinned fish last year and it was fun, but ultimately not for me. I don’t get any icks from seafood so I wasn’t icked out but it was just fine.

I liked octopus and squid the most because the flesh was tender and soft and melt in your mouth. Cockles and scallops and trout also good. HIGHLY depends on the brand you get. I loved and .gourmet the most. Sardines gave me the ick, I’ll always love anchovies. Salmon was a bit too fishy but I’ll try again cautiously. Cod was good as well from .gourmet.

Really liked that one Alison Roman recipe for anchovies and chips, but I wouldn’t miss it. Never tried mussels because I hated the razor clams, and never ever would try oysters because it would give me an ick for the real thing.

Anyway should I do an AMA about being an undeserving tinned fish girl?

An ode to the best restaurant in Toronto, .

My parents visited here from a country that has a 40% south Asian population with really good food and were more impressed with it than anything back home. The sambar is the star here, very few South Indian restaurants get it right — GL’s has the perfect balance of tang, sweetness and spice.

Here’s what to get:

🔸 Medu Vada: this is a fritter made from lentils and spices like black pepper and coriander and ginger. Often it’s soggy or not crispy and GL’s is perfectly fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. I get sambar on the side to maintain the texture.

🔸 Idli: these are soft steamed rice and lentil cakes, with a light bounce and a bit of a spongey texture that soaks up all the sambar. I love getting these dipped in sambar, they throw a dollop of chutney and sprinkle chopped red onions and it’s soooo good. I love to mash it into the sambar and eat it like that.

🔸 Uttappum: similar to dosa, but thicker, the one I get is covered in podi (a condiment/spice/seasoning made with lentils) and onions and green chilli. The bottom is nice and crispy and the top is perfectly fluffy and chewy. This is going to be part of my order every time.

🔸 Mysore Dosa, masala on the side, cooked in ghee: my husband gets this with “bhaji” or vegetables, and I get it regular with “masala” aka the potatoes on the side because I don’t like when they get soggy. I tell anyone who eats this with me to smell it because the ghee makes it smell outrageously good. Served with a red, green and white chutney, this is the best dosa out there.

🔸 Filter coffee: this is a coffee made with chicory that’s very common in south India. Served in a davara or a tumbler and bowl, you’re meant to pour it from one vessel to the other with long pours to froth it up.

🔸 Bonus: I get the chai here too because coffee makes me anxious and my husband also gets the mango lassi which is fine, nothing to write home about.

is one of the best laminated pastry shops in Toronto. Virgyl and Bikramjeet are making some of the best croissants, breads and sweet treats. They bring Indian flavours to their French pastry creations and they’ve got some really delicious items on their menu.

South Asians will find the familiar Keema Pav, Bombay Sandwich and Aloo Masala Toast with their delicious house made bread and once in a while they’ll have a kebab croissant. Even if you’re not south Asian, these flavours will blow you away. It’s a really great space to hang out and have a coffee, breakfast or a snack in, so highly recommend checking them out on Queen across the Loblaw.

1. I also just discovered they make my favourite cookie — crispy on the outside, soft goey and chewy on the inside and FULL OF dark chocolate chips, I can’t stop imagining this warmed up.

2. Their croissants are one of my faves in the city, flakey, buttery perfection, and the options are ENDLESS.

3. A little egg sandwich in a croissant???? Ufffff

4. They also make my favourite sourdough batard in the city, the colour and crumb is perfect and it’s not too tangy but you get that fermented flavour

5. FERRARO CROISSANT. These dudes are nuts.

6. They also do a Supreme Croissant, those viral things from New York but these look way better 👀

7. LOOK at the cookies…I want everything in this case

is my new favourite pizza place!!!! In Hamilton, so go do a whole day trip!!!!

Detroit style pizza with the most unique toppings I’ve ever had.

Here are all the flavours in order of which I liked the most

1) Buttery Bacon Corn Pie: this actually had the flavour of butter, made with miso butter, Ontario corn, bacon bits and freshness from green onions and sweetness from garlic, topped with togarashi, this was our entire group’s favourite.

2) Secret Pickle Pizza: this isn’t like the lazily slapped together pickle pizza you see at the CNE, this one was thoughtfully made, the balance was incredible which made it addictive. Roasted garlic with chunks of garlic helped cut through the salty with sweetness and richness, the pickles brought the salty flavour bomb, the fresh dill added a fresh element and then the bacon really balanced out all those flavours with a Smokey richness. It was so freakinggggg good.

3) Garlic Garlic Garlic: you’d think this one would be one note, but the sweetness of the garlic oil and confit garlic balanced so well with the richness of the garlic aioli — then the Romano and parsley topping brought the funk and the fresh. Big hunks of creamy ricotta held all of that garlic flavour while also giving you a bit of a break from the garlickyness.

4) Spicy Pepperoni: this one only comes in last because we already have ’s spicy pepperoni slice. But the pepperonis on here were high quality and very generous. Dotted with jalapeño and drizzled with scotch bonnet honey that brought the spice, that was balanced with the sweetness of the tomato sauce that covered it.

I have discovered that I love Detroit style pizza — I’m a bready pizza girl and I love the thick crust, I love the crispy cheese on the edges and the thick gooey cheese on top. I think it reminds me of Indian pizzas.

What was special about this place was not only the unique flavours but the fact that each flavour was not a gimmick — it actually tasted incredible. Every ingredient on every pizza was carefully, purposefully and thoughtfully balanced, and it made for an incredible eating experience.

If you’re in Hamilton, this is a must-visit.

tinned fish lately 🐟

as a girlie who picks out the cheese from a charc plate, i’ve been dabbling in tinned fish lately. i shockingly don’t get a seafood ick so it’s been fun to explore. some things have given me an ick for the most part I’ve been preferring seafood to salamis. i’m also all about the snacky picky bits so i love a meal like this!

my fave tins:
🐠 fish wife x fly by jing salmon in chilli oil
🐠 ar de arte cockles
🐠 fishwife anchovies
🐠 ar de arte cod
🐠 ABC trout

really want to try scout, especially the lobster and crab!

best places to buy them in Toronto:

i’d recommend starting with a fish you already know and love, cod is a nice mild flavour before you go into the fishier ones like sardines. i prefer eating with bread and bland crackers but i’m going to experiment with ramen, etc very soon. it’s a great way to snack and get your omega3s in!

drop your fave brands + spots to get them in the comments!!!!
