Signing The Paperwork ✍️
“When should we sign the marriage license?” is one of the most common questions couples ask me.
Typically, the marriage license is signed as part of the ceremony.
But more and more couples are choosing to sign it privately; all we need is the couple, their two witnesses and the officiant.
✍️ Signing Before:
If the couple is planning to see each other before the ceremony, signing before can be a great way to “get the legal part out of the way”.
This is exactly what M + S decided to do last weekend and this photo clearly demonstrates what a joyful option this can be!
Another “before” option could be a breakfast signing… the officiant comes in the morning before the couple starts to get ready and signs the paperwork with them and their witnesses then.
✍️ Signing After:
Sometimes couples will choose to sign immediately after the ceremony (before the celebration begins… don’t forget that we are signing a legal document so everyone needs to be sober!)
The “signing after” version can be a brilliant way to build a private moment for the couple into an otherwise jam-packed timeline; they can sign, take a breath, ground themselves in the moment, maybe have a glass of water or champagne (or both!) and a nibble before heading out to greet their loved ones and celebrate together.
Our officiants will work with you to determine when the signing will work best for you.
