Please help if you can… whether you foster or adopt a furever bestie or donate to assist your local rescues, every bit makes a huge difference 🤍

THE STATE OF ONTARIO'S HOMELESS DOG CRISIS: In 15 years of rescue, we have witnessed stories that will stay with us forever. One, in particular, has never left me.

A decade ago, we welcomed a 14½-year-old yellow Labrador named Sadie into our rescue after she had been surrendered to a local shelter.

It didn’t take long to understand why her family could no longer care for her. Sadie had advanced Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD), a form of dementia in dogs. She was frightened, confused, and sadly, far beyond the point where treatment could make a meaningful difference.

She was only with us for a few days.

Those few days weren’t about trying to save her. They were about giving her dignity. We made sure she wasn’t alone. She wasn’t in a kennel. She was in a foster home, surrounded by kindness, comfort, and love until it was time to let her go.

But what has stayed with me all these years wasn’t actually Sadie.

It was a letter.

Tucked inside her veterinary records was an email written years earlier by her previous owner—a police officer.

He explained that he was single, working long hours, often picking up overtime, and struggling with the reality that he couldn’t give Sadie the life she deserved. He had found a family he truly believed would love her for the rest of her life. You could feel the heartbreak in his words, but also the hope. He believed he was making the greatest sacrifice a person can make for a dog they love by letting her go so she could have a better life.

I’ve often wondered about him.

I’m sure his career continued. Maybe he was promoted. Maybe he became a sergeant. Perhaps I’ve even seen him on the news over the years and never realized it.

What I do know is this…

He never could have imagined that the yellow Lab he loved so deeply would one day end up homeless. That she would be surrendered in her senior years. That strangers would be the ones to hold her in her final moments. He believed he had secured her forever home.

That story broke my heart.

But today…

Today, Sadie’s story isn’t what breaks my heart the most. Because today, Sadie’s story isn’t unusual.

The saddest story in Ontario isn’t about one dog anymore.

It’s about thousands.

Every day, dogs are surrendered because families can no longer cope. Others are abandoned. Municipal shelters plead for help because they have no space left. Rescues are full. Foster homes are full. Adoption applications have slowed to a trickle.

Then a crisis happens, like the wildfires in Northern Ontario, and everyone asks the same question:

“Where will these dogs go?”

The truth is… there is nowhere left for many of them to go.

We have incredible dogs in our care. Healthy dogs. Gentle dogs. Dogs who would make wonderful family companions. Yet they wait month after month without a single application. Not because they’re “bad” dogs. Because there are simply too many homeless dogs, and not enough homes.

This isn’t just our reality, it's the reality facing rescues and shelters across Ontario.

The emergency isn’t coming.

It’s here.

The homeless dog crisis isn’t measured by one heartbreaking story anymore. It’s measured by thousands of dogs waiting for someone to choose them.

And if we don’t start talking about it, understanding it, and working together to change it, the stories we’ll be telling ten years from now will be even sadder than Sadie’s.

Because every homeless dog has a story.

The question is whether they’ll get the ending they deserve.
