A beautiful person on a beautiful evening at the Vancouver Convention Centre
for Art Vancouver 2026.
Last summer, Kyle discovered a love for drawing and painting with Elika. For two hours, he stayed focused, engaged, and enjoyed the Art class with Elika. Thank you for supporting his interests and creating a space where he could thrive.
That was a win for all of us! creativity, connection and mindfulness. Kyle saw the map (above the photo here) and that’s when Kyle told us, “again painting this Summer!” ❤️🤟🏼 🌎

A video demo from Kyle, just in case you don’t follow….. Kyle is Deaf and uses gestures here along with ASL to communicate with all of you. The bracelets are made by Kyle as part of his advocacy and awareness for CHARGE Syndrome and Autism. ❤️
Now 5 years into this journey, and we are so grateful for everyone who continues to support and believe in him! www.kyleskiosk.com

Sometimes we wonder what a beautiful coincidence and blessing this is. We always think that Granny is truly looking after Kyle.
Kyle inherited British citizenship by descent, and one day he would love to visit Scotland to learn more about his roots and heritage. He said, “After Japan!” ☺️
His Auntie Gayna, who recently visited us, works in social work and supports people with disabilities in the very same area in Scotland. She also manages different support providers there. The connections feel so meaningful.
As Kyle gets older, we know he needs more independence, and we also know our family will need respite and support along the way. These are the things we are thoughtfully planning for, not only in Canada, but possibly in the Philippines or Scotland as well.

Peace of mind matters. No one person should carry the full responsibility of deciding the well-being of another human being whether it is a child with a disability who will one day become an adult, or an elderly parent needing support later in life.
Everyone deserves a circle of people who care, advocate, and help make thoughtful decisions together. That is why microboards and support networks matter, not only for people with disabilities, but for seniors as well.
For us, Vela Canada is for Kyle. It is part of planning with love, dignity, and long-term support in mind. Understanding how Vela works for your child with a disability may also inspire families to design their own informal microboard or support circle as parents age.

Peace of mind matters. Never place the well-being of another person entirely in the hands of just one individual , whether it’s a child with a disability who will one day become an adult, or an elderly loved one.
For us, Vela Canada is for Kyle. Writing a will is for us. Both are acts of love, planning, and protection for the future. Organizations like Vela Canada mainly focus on people with disabilities, but the philosophy behind microboards shared responsibility, dignity, and community-based support can absolutely apply to seniors too.
Many families naturally create informal versions of this already: siblings, close friends, neighbours, healthcare advocates, and caregivers working together instead of relying on one exhausted person to manage everything alone.
