This cake was made years before I started a bakery, and before the years of practice. Yet it became the most important cake I’ve ever made.
We didn’t know it then, but this was the last birthday cake I would ever bake for my brother, Skyler.
I’m so grateful I took these photos, even when he rolled his eyes and told me to put the camera away.
By this point, we had already weathered a lot together. Life had taken us down some difficult roads, but we never lost the bond that mattered most. There was never a road so long or difficult that it changed the love we had for one another. No matter what life threw at us, we always found a way to preserve the connection that meant so much to both of us.
Despite everything, Skyler never stopped cheering me on. He was one of my biggest supporters, and he made sure I knew it. He saw something in me that I still hope to one day fully see in myself.
When I look at these photos now, I don’t just see a birthday cake. I see a moment in time when neither of us knew how precious it would become.
Happy Heavenly Birthday, Skyler. 5 long years without you.
I miss you, and I’m thankful for every conversation, every laugh, every memory, every season we shared, and every cup of coffee we drank together. ❤️
