This photo! Family bliss, circa 1974. Beer from a stubby bottle, straight down my two-year old gullet. That amazing sweater my mom is wearing! Those crazy balaclava-toque hats that she knit for my big brother and I. The puddle-jumper suit that my brother is wearing. We wore those things ALL THE TIME. The glimpse of the handlebar of the tricycle my brother is riding brings back all kinds of memories: We had two tricycles, one big, one small. They were both from the dump (all our bikes came from the dump), and they were both spray-painted red (all our bikes were spray-painted red). The big tricycle had large wooden blocks for pedals so our little legs could reach them. We rode our bikes every day, all day, all summer.
I’m so grateful to both my parents for making sure we were outside all the time, and that it was fun. The lion’s share of the work on the home front was done by my mom, of course. My mom made it happen. ❤️
This week’s menu is below, with some inspiration from my mom.
Sourdough breads:
Holey Hannah - French-style bread
Grainy Day - multigrain
Beer Belly - whole rye flour and beer!
Focaccia with tomatoes and chevre 🍅 🐐
Chocolate Ginger Scones
Mini Cherry Cheesecakes 🍒😋
(In honour of that cheesecake my mom used to make in the early 1980’s with a graham cracker crust, some strange unbaked cream cheese concoction, and gloopy store-bought cherry pie filling, all in a 9x13 glass pan. There may even have been Ready Whip, or whatever it was called.
My version is nothing like this, only the name is the same, to stir up some nostalgia).
