As a postpartum doula, caring for a family means caring for more than just the baby.
It’s answering allllllll the questions that come with a whole new world of baby things, helping the household keep ticking through the chaos with meals and folded laundry, and gently reminding parents to rest, hydrate, and give their own bodies time to recover.
I recently crossed paths with a former postpartum mama in a professional setting, where she was seeing my now-grown daughter. After the appointment, she apologized to my daughter for chatting with me the whole time, then quietly added, “She took care of me.”
Those words have stayed with me.
In the excitement of a new baby, so much of the attention naturally goes to the little one. And of course, those little sweet potatos need all that love and care. But the people who have just become parents need it, too.
Sometimes, the most meaningful part of postpartum support isn't a particular task or piece of advice. It's making sure the person caring for everyone else feels cared for, too.
Because the baby matters. And so does the person becoming their parent. ❤️
