Phillip James Rouse is BACK

Formerly making theatre as Don't Look Away, the team breathed new life in to lost and forgotten Australian plays, received numerous nominations across 5 productions, and reviews like:

"Phillip Rouse's direction is what Sydney's independent scene is hungry for..." - The Music
'Stunning...Immediate, urgent and real' - Suzygoessee
"Should be grabbed with both hands and savoured" - Stagenoise

After a stint in London, Phillip James Rouse is back in Sydney with a razor-sharp 21st century re-imagining of Tartuffe by Moliere at KXT bAKEHOUSE - and we're looking for 4 more cast to join the team.

Audition EOIs are now open and must close midnight Friday 29th May

TARTUFFE
By Phillip James Rouse
(after Molière)

A grieving matriarch. A fractured family. A holy man who promises salvation… a recipe for disaster.

Molière’s Tartuffe gets a razor-sharp 21st-century remix at KXT: part savage comedy, part gut-punch tragedy. What begins as biting farce spirals into an unnerving satire of power, lust, and faith in a world desperate for certainty. Prepare for laughter that curdles into horror as Sydney’s boldest young artists rip apart a classic — and expose how easily charm becomes control.

Wicked. Sexy. Unmissable.

Playing 2 - 17 October at KXT Bakehouse

$30 early bird tickets available now: https://www.kingsxtheatre.com/tartuffe

Something's happening...

Breaking radio silence to express our sadness at the passing of Tonie-Rayne Steele. Tonie was a very talented young stage manager and we were lucky enough to work with her on The Rivers of China in 2014.

Our condolences to her partner, family and friends.

May she rest in Peace.

Phil, Martelle and everyone at Don't Look Away.

Congrats to all on a great year of theatre in Sydney.

"Like this website, many of these theatre productions, attract no significant financial reward to speak of. We do it all for love, and with the understanding that art is a natural, essential part of human existence. We refuse to let money alone decide the things we leave behind, choosing instead to pursue something infinitely more meaningful, and almost always more challenging than we had ever prepared ourselves for. It is an honour to be part of this wonderful landscape, and having the opportunity to help shape it into something better, is truly the most fulfilling vocation."

A celebration of the best work in theatre, Sydney 2017. All the lists, all the names, all the awards. Who’s in? Who’s out!

Science provides the answers but art is the moral compass, says Dr Karl Kruszelnicki. "But how exactly do the artists and scientists work together?"

05/12/2017

We, as independent theatre companies and practitioners of Australia, stand in solidarity with all victims of sexual harassment and assault, in our industry, in all workplaces, and the wider community.

We want to end the culture of silence at all levels.
We are committed to zero tolerance of this behaviour in our rehearsal rooms and offices, on our stages, on our sets, in our workplaces, in the street, and in our homes.

Too often, however, we have failed to commit sufficient resources and attention to protect the vulnerable from abuses of power. And we have entered into partnerships with organisations without having the courage to demand and pursue their commitment to a safe work environment.

We will no longer tolerate this climate of fear and silence.

We call upon our community, our industry, and - especially - those in positions of power in the sector, to
- swiftly and unreservedly condemn sexual abuse and harassment in their workplaces;
- immediately develop robust and thorough policies and procedures for reporting and eliminating sexual harrassment and assault that adhere to a national standard;
- offer complete transparency about processes of complaint;
- maintain absolute confidentiality of complainants;
- offer support to victims as they come forward;
- hold all existing partner organisations and employees to this identical standard.

We need to stand together, in order to bring this culture of abuse to an effective, consistent and immediate end.
