The meat pie is one of Australia’s most popular dishes. Some might even consider it our National dish. It’s undeniably right up there with dampers, lamingtons and Anzac biscuits.
Australians obsession with the humble meat pie started from a very young age. In heater-less schools built for hot climates despite wintry days, there was nothing quite like the smell and savoury taste sensation found in this warm, mince-filled bakery delight. It came in just the right size for two smallish hands to hold, with a square casing solid enough to retain its shape mid-bite. The pastry on top was wonderfully flaky, but flimsy too, so the tomato sauce nozzle would be poked directly into the pie, mixing sugary tomato sweetness with beefy mince. And for most Australians, this pie obsession will happily thrive into adulthood.
There’s no better way to celebrate Australia then having a freshly baked meat pie, made here on the Sunshine coast
A good old Australian meat pie and an afternoon at the footy screaming your team to victory goes hand in glove; its very Aussie! Every winter, tens of thousands of them are eaten at footy matches all over the country.
The Australian meat pie can be eaten as a takeaway similar to hotdogs and burgers are in America. It had been estimated that here in Australia we eat about 12 met pies per year per head of population, so that is a bloody lot of pies and tomato sauce!
There are so many different pies available now to complement the original meat pie. They come in all varieties of shapes, sizes, flavours and fillings.
