The cabbage moths have decimated my bok choy and pak choy. The recent wet weather seems have created the perfect breeding conditions for them. Usually I’d try to get rid of the eggs and larvae but these plants are too far gone so the chickens are enjoying them.

I’ve taken out the neighbouring kale plants and washed them. Hopefully they’ll bounce back. Now I’m off to scrub the table itself to rid of any remaining pests. Thankfully my beans were unaffected (check out the beautiful bounty in my final photo).

I’m going to get some white pegs to add to the leaves of the plants as apparently the moths think the pegs are other moths and won’t lay their eggs there. If you’ve found another successful method to ward off the moths get rid of their eggs please let me know!

I look forward to the second Sunday of the month because it’s harvest swap day. I’m just back from 10 days away and my The Salad Table hydroponics is bursting with all the shades of green. Perfect for a trug full of mixed leaves to share. I came home from the swap with a happy heart, new ideas, an enormous grapefruit, a sugar cane root and a month’s supply of egg cartons.

I was given some sprouting garlic, I decided to plant it in a pop up bed so I could position it in the full sun. All was going well until Milo monster decided to do a spot of gardening. I’ll be lucky to get one clove and Milo is unrepentant.

Today’s job is picking and processing passionfruit. We have a prolific panama vine we purchased a few years ago at Fruit Tree Cottage.

It treats us to the sweetest fruit I’ve ever tasted. It can be a race to see if we can beat the possums, cockatoos and rats to the fruit but this year there’s plenty for everyone.

Will makes a lot of passionfruit cheesecake (yum!) so I often scoop out the pulp and freeze it in cheesecake sized batches which happily are also the right size to add to my breakfast bowl.

This crop of passionfruit are destined to become a rich seed-free syrup. We had much discussion about whether to include the seeds or not but in the end the chooks were the winners. They love passionfruit too.

Nothing goes to waste. We toss the skins in the thermomix to blitz them before adding them to the worm farm.

What do we do with the syrup? Mocktail anyone?

Beetroot is plentiful in the garden right now. I harvested a big bunch this morning.

I chop off the stems and then seperate them from the leaves. We use all three parts. The leaves are great in salads and as wilted greens. I cut the stems into small batons and add them to whatever other veggies we’re having.

I brush the dirt off the actual beet and store them in a paper bag in the crisper. They last for up to a month. Not washing them until I’m ready to use them definitely prolongs storage. We eat them roasted, mashed and grated in salad.

How do you store your beetroot and how do you use it? Or is it something you don’t eat?

First time growing sweet potato and look at the size of these beauties! Feeling pretty chuffed with my little potato patch right now (seems it also grew a Milo pup).

These are the white variety and so far we’ve eaten them baked and mashed. So creamy and delicious. My purple variety should be ready to harvest in the next couple of weeks.

Courage, creativity and community. Three themes that come up time and again when talking to people about living a life of meaning. While we were brainstorming names for our project we encountered several others with similar ideas and reached out. Alison and Will have made a business out of their suburban permaculture plot in Palmwoods, Queensland.

A desire to let go of the ever increasing work-and-spend cycle and connect with community has opened one door after another. Alison shares how it took a personal crisis to give her the courage to take the leap and set up the business Live More With Less

I spoke with Alison a couple of weeks ago while on my way to see a friend further north along the trainline.

Have you ever had a cucamelon?

It loves humidity, grows on a vine, looks like a tiny watermelon and tastes like a cucumber. What’s more it packed with enough nutrients to make it a superfood!

Our single vine is a prolific producer so we’ve been eating cucamelons every which way. They’re great as a snack, in salads and we’ve just pickled some. Think cornichons. Yum!

PSA: On Friday night the crown fell off my tooth (damn you chocolate coated honeycomb). Not wanting to spend a million dollars on an emergency dentist and because it wasn’t really sore I popped into the chemist to see if there was some sort of gel that would protect my until tooth I saw my dentist on Monday. I was thinking of bonjela for big people so imagine my surprise when I was offered a product to reattach my crown. Just in case I’m not the only one who had no idea such thing existed, I took a photo of the packet. You’re welcome 😝 Oh and the best bit?! It’s made here in Australia and it works!
