Hi all!

Want to play against one of only a handful of grandmasters in Australia? On Tuesday 5th of October, Australian Grandmaster David Smerdon will be playing against multiple players in a friendly simultaneous match against UQCC members. If you are interested in playing in the event, please put your details in the following google share document:

We have a great Winter Holiday Program on next week on the Gold Coast!

Run over 4 days, this is a great way for kids to learn more about the game of chess whilst being in a fun and supportive environment. It's a great way for kids to meet new friends from different schools and also a chance to improve (or get) a Queensland Junior Chess Rating!

This Saturday, Top Chess is running a fund raising event for FM Gene Nakauchi's family. Gardiner Chess wishes to support this tournament and encourage people to go along and support a lovely Gold Coast Chess family during this difficult time.

Gardiner Chess coaches Shaun Curtis and Douglas Williams will also be taking part. It is bound to be a very strong tournament for a great cause.

Gardiner Chess is delighted to be supporting a brand new tournament - The ChessKid.com Australia Championships which will be held on Saturday 17th July!

There are prizes to be won, including coaching sessions with Australian #1 GM Anton Smirnov and trophies which will be sent out post event.

The event will be run in 4 different sub-sections: Prep (Kindy) - Year 3, Year 4-6, Year 7-9 and Year 10-12.

There will be live commentary on the day with Queensland GM David Smerdon (Author of Smerdon's Scandinavian and The Complete Chess Swindler) and other to be announced hosts.

We look forward to seeing lots of students involved in what promises to be an exciting event!

We regret to inform everybody associated with our junior chess club over the last four years that we have had to make the difficult and unfortunate decision to close down the St Peters Lutheran Rookies club permanently.

We give our sincere thanks to St Peters Lutheran College who have been gracious and kind hosts of the Rookies Chess Club, and to many SPLC staff members and volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to assist the club.

We also give our utmost gratitude to all parents of the students who have given us nothing less than positive support and encouragement throughout the history of the club.

We and everyone who has helped us at the club have immensely enjoyed being a part of the Rookies club over the last four years.

Everyone who has worked with the students is very proud of the achievements of our junior players, as we have watched them develop their chess levels, problem solving skills and maturity in dealing with intellectual challenges as well as positive social interactions in times of triumph or disappointment alike.

Dear Chess Players, Parents and Staff,

We are saddened to have to inform the community that club activities remain suspended for Term 3, 2020.

After recent discussions with our host school, SPLC, it has become clear that for us to re-open the club would require us to have very limited numbers of people allowed in the venue, as well as a very careful process of recording details for each person coming in and out of the venue, for COVID-19 contact tracking purposes.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

We have recently checked the status of other junior clubs in Brisbane and most are still shut or unclear in their re-opening details. Please check with individual clubs to determine their situation.

We have decided to refund all funds we still hold from Term 1 on a pro-rata basis. We ask that all members for whom we received term registration fees get in touch via email to arrange a pro-rata refund. We will require BSB and account numbers to process the refunds.

We would like this situation to not mean the permanent closure of Rookies Club. So, we will keep investigating our options and re-assess whether we will re-open later in Term 3 or in Term 4, then inform everyone if the situation changes.

Please be assured we miss running our weekly club and seeing our students develop their thinking and social skills. In the meantime, we encourage our students to keep practicing and studying their chess. We remind our members that www.chess.com and www.lichess.org are particularly good and safe websites for children to play other people and to do puzzles, read coaching articles and to keep up with the chess world - also try chessbase.com for international chess news and chess24.com to watch live Master Tournaments.

Term 2 Rookies is unfortunately cancelled until further notice due to the Covid 19 crisis. When restrictions are lifted then we will reassess if and when the club may reopen. Until then, please stay safe and healthy.

We regret to have to make this announcement, but our club activities are suspended for the remainder of Term 1 2020. We have been informed by our hosting school, SPLC, that club activities are to be suspended due to concerns regarding transmission of COVID-19.

We apologise for the inconvenience. We will send out notifications via email as well, and, will be making arrangements to return fees for the remainder of the term, or credit them towards a next term. Please get in touch with us if you have not received a message regarding fees in the next week.

We hope everyone stays safe in these uncertain times and hope to see you back at the club when we are given the green light to re-start activities.
